Driver T/5823725, Royal Army Service Corps, Attached Headquarters, 3rd Division. Died 01/06/1940. Age 32.

 

Born in Ipswich in 1908, the eldest of four children of Arthur Wood and Beatrice Elvia Woods. In 1936 John married Doris Lilian May Battle who came from Walton. Their two children Margaret b. 1936 and John b. 1937 appear to have been born locally before the family moved to Amesbury, Wiltshire.

Driver Wood was reported as killed in action whilst in France with the British Expeditionary Force. The BEF were being evacuated by "Little Ships" between 26th May and 6th June 1940. The report of John's death was made 11th June 1940. Commemorated on the Dunkirk Memorial.
