Private 42841, 1st Battalion, Lincolnshire Regiment, previously 42839 Cambridgeshire Regiment.

 

Born 7 March 1884, the son of William Tooley Stanborough & his second wife Mary Ann nee Everett.  Ernest married Ethel Emma Elsden October 1907 and in 1911 he was working as a house painter and lived with his wife at 10 Cage Lane Walton.

 

The 1st Battalion Lincolnshire Regiment were in action at the Battle of St Quentin where the German artillery launched the largest bombardment of the war.  Over 3.5 million shells were launched along a 40 mile front. The 1st Lincolnshire fell back to regroup with support units and formed a new defensive line at Chapel Hill and Genin Well Copse where they stabilised to halt the attack.  It was during this action that Ernest was killed 21/3/1918. He is commemorated on the Pozieres Memorial.
