Edward was born 24 June 1906 in Stamford Hill, London, the only son of Edward Howe, a mechanical engineer, and Nettie Flood nee McIntosh. In 1911 the family had moved to Bungay where Edward Howe, a native of Ipswich, was working as a dealer in farm produce. In 1939 his parents were living at "Sans Souci" Felixstowe Ferry, his father working as a constructional engineer. They later moved to High Road, Felixstowe.
