Flight Sergeant 561600, 107 Squadron, Royal Air Force. Died 27/03/1940. Age 29.
Born 1st January 1911 in Camberwell, the son of Emily Maria Nichols and Gershon Lamm. In 1932 David married Jessie Maud Smith and in 1934 their son Peter was born. The family were living with Jessie's parents at 157 High Road, Felixstowe in 1939.
David joined the Royal Air Force as an aircraft apprentice 27th August 1927, on reaching 18 on 1st January 1929 he signed up for 12 years. 107 Squadron was formed in 1936 as a bomber unit flying Blenheims. The Squadron took part in many of the major targeted raids of the European theatre. Flight Sergeant Nichols took off from RAF Wattisham in Blenheim L8747 on a photo recce to obtain photographs of the previous nights raid of Hornum on the island of Sylt. They were shot down in the target area by Me 109 of Uffz.K. Oploskk of 11/JG 77. All three air crew were killed. Flight Sergeant Nichols was never found and is commemorated on the Runnymede Memorial.
