Charles Henry Godfrey

Charles was born in Cotton, near Stowmarket in 1893.  He was the youngest of 4 brothers, his father Ephraim was a builders labourer and his mother Kate was a housewife.  In 1911 his parents lived at 340 High Street Walton, all 4 boys had left home by then.  His mother died in January 1914, shortly before Charles.

Charles joined 2nd Battalion The Bedfordshire Regiment on 12th Feb 1910 aged 17.  He died 26 October 1914 during the 1st Battle of Ypres when the British Expeditionary Force captured the town.  He is commemorated on the Menin Gate Memorial in Ypres.
