Albert Henry Gort

Albert was born in Walton on January 30, 1890.  He lived at 1 Princes Road (now number 75) with his father Henry, mother Julia, and 9 sisters.  Albert attended Ipswich Middle School for boys 1897-1905 he then completed an Engineering apprenticeship at Metropolitan Railway Works in Neasden from 1906 - 1909.

He joined up around 1915, initially as a private in the Suffolk Yeomanry and the Corps of Hussars before gaining a commission on April 14 1917 in the Royal Defence Corps. He served in both Egypt and the UK.

Albert was a Second Lieutenant when he died in the Eastern Command Hospital in Cambridge on November 6, 1918, aged 28. He is buried in St Peter and St Paul graveyard and commemorated on Felixstowe Seafront Memorial and on the Northgate Memorial – formerly Ipswich Grammar School
