Alan was born in Kirton in 1897, he had 2 younger brothers and a younger sister. His father Alan was a cowman and his mother Lucy nee Self lived in Sluice New Cottages in Kirton in 1911.

He served in 2nd Battalion The Suffolk Regiment and died on 13 November 1916 age 19, during a failed attempt to take the town of Serre. He is buried at Serre Road Cemetery No3 and is also commemorated on Kirton War Memorial.
